Burlesque isn’t clothing removal
While striptease is a beloved part of modern burlesque, the heart of the art form runs much deeper. Burlesque has roots in satire, comedy, and theatrical storytelling, with performers using exaggeration and seduction to entertain, provoke, and tease — often without ever removing a single garment.
Legends like Gypsy Rose Lee were known just as much for their wit and playful charm as for what they took off (or didn’t). True tease isn’t about how much skin you show, but how you engage the audience’s imagination. A well-timed glance, a slow reveal of a gloved wrist, or even the deliberate denial of a reveal can be just as powerful — sometimes more so — than a full strip. Clothing removal is a tool, but it’s not the definition of burlesque.
The tease, the intention, and the performance itself are where the real magic happens.
In short, Burlesque is MUCH more than simple clothing removal. It deserves as much respect, care and value as any other performance discipline.
